Triple Glazing vs Double Glazing

This week is Big Energy Saving Week #BESW15, and therefore thought it appropriate to look at the benefits of updating your double glazed windows to triple glazed windows.

Triple Glazing is becoming more and more popular, as many people are looking for better energy efficient windows, and double glazing is now no longer enough. The normal method of comparing the energy performance of windows is to use the U value measurement, and the lower the U value the more energy efficient that window is. For example: –

Single Glazing – U Value of 5
Older Double Glazing – U Value of 3
New Modern Double Glazing – U Value of 1.6
However, Triple Glazing – U Value of 0.8

It is clear to see that Triple Glazing has the best U Value score out of them all.

One of the main reasons people choose to switch to triple glazing is for comfort. You could insulate the walls, roof and floor of your house, BUT if you ignore the glazing you will end up with cold spots surrounding the windows at night, which cause draughts, condensation and heat loss. Homebuilding & Renovating looked at a study carried out in Germany showing what happens to surface temperatures on various forms of glazing, these were the results: –

  • Next to a single glazed window, the internal surface temperature is around 1degrees
  • Next to a double glazed window (pre 2000) the surface temperature is around 11degrees
  • Next to a modern, energy efficient double glazed window, the surface temperature is around 16 degrees
  • Next to a TRIPLE GLAZED window, with a centre-pane U vale of 0.8, the temperature is 18 degrees

So you can see a double glazed window is ‘livable’, however a triple glazed window is just that much more comfortable.

More benefits of Triple Glazing

As well as having the benefit of heat, triple glazed windows also offer the following benefits…

  • Decrease in Noise Pollution

The extra pane in the windows serves to block out even more sound than double glazed windows does.

  • Intruder Deterrent

The extra paine in the windows makes it that much harder for burgulars to break in.

  • Toughest Windows

Triple Glazing features a multi-point locking system as standard.
